Obscure Medieval Monks
The series of digital artworks entitled Obscure Medieval Monks was created under project name: AI &I. These are digital artworks created using AI technology and post-processed by me. It is this post-processing that allows me as creator to claim copyright (i.e. AI).
This latest technology enables me as a maker to create images with a skill and technique that I did not master before. Anno 2022, the AI is not perfect (yet) and I have to post-process and change the images where necessary in my opinion. As a creator, I want to have control over the end result which has its origin from my mind/ spirit of creation but depend on the AI's interpretation.
Monks are known as the Devotees of Spirit through meditation and contemplation on how Man should live in relation to his environment and himself. The human mind is the source of everything, Existence, and is ultimately also the development of Artificial Intelligence.
Cycles
A collection of three digital artworks.
Everything has a center. The drain water with paint residue always rotates around one point down the drain. Everything revolves around one point in the universe with an infinite number of centers as each human being is the center of the universe. When does something begin and when does it stop in this universe of infinity?
Spin produces vibration and music. Everything comes to life.
The drain stop, makes it all stop as counterbalance in the universe to end the cycle.
Golden Ratio
A collection of digital paintings based on the Golden Ratio.
In order to achieve beauty and perfection, the Golden Ratio is used as a measure of proportion in architecture but is also used in everyday objects such as a playing card, flag and matchbox.
But besides the mathematical calculation of the Golden Ratio, there is another way to achieve beauty and perfection within free expression. This way of creating can also lead to beauty and order despite the fact that at first glance it looks chaotic and illogical and reminds one of the counterpart of the Golden Ratio.
This short Zen story about a flag has a strong connection to the visual arts:
Three men are looking at a flying flag. One of the men says:
" Look, that flag is moving."
The other man says, "No, it's the wind moving."
The third man says, "No, it's your mind moving."
Herman Brood Alive
Herman Brood- Zwolle, November 5, 1946 - Amsterdam, July 11, 2001
These three works are based on the black and white pictures I took of Dutch rocker and painter Herman Brood during a concert in 1997 at club LVC in Leiden.
I worked on these black and white photo ’s digitally with color.
Brood himself worked on his paintings and screenprints very colorful and with a child like spontineity. I captured his colorfulness combined with the strong, dark and mysterious gesture notable during the concert. Giving him the status of the pop- icon he is today.
Brood was a remarkable man. He lived a full Rock 'n Roll lifestyle as a musician and painter. He "joked" about committing suicide later in life. In an interview, he once said that it would be great to commit suicide by jumping off a building and just before hitting the pavement, catching a last glimpse under a girl's skirt....
He finally committed suicide by jumping off the Hilton Hotel Amsterdam in 2001 with a suicide bill in his pocket that read, "Make it a nice party, maybe I'll see you again." ( “Maak er een mooi feest van, misschien zie ik jullie nog eens.” )
Labels
These are invented labels of beverages where the identity is a combination of autonomous free expression and the conventional rules of graphic design. The graphic symmetry of labels combined with the free autonomous expression in which both figurative and abstract forms are created.
How does identity arise? To what extent does it come authentically from within and what is taken from someone or something else? Where is the boundary between being an individual and being part of a group?
Mundo Subterráneo
A collection of 4 black and white Monoprints, two screen prints and three mixed media color drawings.
The mysterious underworld of a subway infrastructure or netherworld.
Train and tunnel lights take on a macabre appearance, transforming into skeletal, skull and bone-like shapes of a deep underground world. As if you are crossing the river Styx into the underworld.
Mundo Subterráneo 2
Barcelona Subway City
The structure of the city combined with everyday life when riding the subway.
The mysterious underworld of a subway infrastructure combined with the outer world from above.
